What to Wear & Expect When Wedding Dress Shopping: The Ultimate Northern Indiana Bridal Guide

3 min read

Shopping for your dream wedding dress is one of the most exciting milestones of wedding planning, but it can also feel a little overwhelming if you don’t know what to bring or expect! Whether you’re visiting us from right here in Columbia City, driving in from Fort Wayne, or coming from across Northern Indiana, proper preparation will help you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to find "The One."

Here is everything you need to know before stepping into your bridal appointment.

What to Wear to Your Bridal Appointment

When trying on wedding gowns, what you wear underneath matters just as much as what you wear on the outside.

1. Seamless Undergarments & Nude Pasties

  • Nude Pasties or Sticky Covers: Most of our wedding dresses feature built-in cups and supportive structure, meaning you won't need a traditional bra! However, many of our brides prefer to wear silicone pasties or nipple covers for extra coverage, peace of mind, and smooth shaping during their fitting.

  • Nude Full-Coverage Undies or Shapewear: Bright colors or dark patterns can show through delicate lace, tulle, and crepe fabrics. Nude, seamless underwear or high-waisted shapewear gives you the cleanest silhouette.

2. Easy-to-Remove Clothing

Opt for a slip-on dress, a button-down shirt, or a comfy lounge set. You will be changing in and out of gowns multiple times during your appointment, so avoid tight clothing or items with lots of buttons and zippers that are frustrating to take off.

3. Minimal Makeup & Clean Hair

  • Keep makeup light and natural to avoid transferring foundation, bronzer, or lipstick onto sample dresses.

  • Wear your hair down or in a loose clip so you can easily pin it up to envision how dresses look with updos, veils, or hairpieces.

What to Bring With You

1. Shoes (Optional, But Fun!)

Shoes are not required for your appointment, as our viewing pedestals give you plenty of lift to see how gowns fall. However, if you are a visual person or planning a specific look, bringing footwear can be a lot of fun!

  • Planning a Special Vibe? Bring 'Em! If you are dreaming of wearing cowgirl boots, statement heels, or cozy sneakers on your wedding day, bring them along! Seeing your boots or unique shoes peeking out from under lace or satin helps you visualize the complete wedding-day look.

  • No Shoes Yet? No Problem! You don't need your official bridal shoes to find your dress. Our pedestals allow us to assess lengths and proportions easily without heels on day one.

2. Heirloom Accessories & Vision Board

If you plan on wearing your grandmother’s veil, a family piece of jewelry, or a specific headpiece, bring it along so we can style it with your favorite gowns.

3. An Open Mind

It is great to bring a Pinterest board, but don't hesitate to try on a style outside your comfort zone—brides are frequently surprised by what they end up loving!

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Private, Personalized Attention

At our Columbia City boutique, your appointment is all about you. You will work 1-on-1 with a dedicated bridal stylist who will listen to your vision, wedding venue details (like rustic barn vibes at The Paddock or sleek city venues), budget, and personal style.

Trying On Sample Sizes

Sample dresses are designed to fit a range of body types. Your stylist will use specialized bridal clips and privacy panels to show you exactly how each gown will look once ordered and tailored to your custom measurements. We carry a wide selection of styles, including inclusive sizing and plus-size bridal gowns.

Bringing Your Bride Tribe

While it's tempting to bring a large group, 2 to 4 of your most trusted family members or friends usually makes for the best experience. Too many opinions can get overwhelming—bring the people who empower you and understand your style!

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I start dress shopping?

We recommend shopping 8 to 12 months before your wedding date. Made-to-order wedding dresses typically take 4 to 6 months to arrive, plus you'll want 2 to 3 months for custom alterations.

Do I need to pay to try on dresses?

No! Our standard bridal appointments are completely complimentary. We focus on providing a relaxed, pressure-free environment so you can enjoy every moment.

How do I budget for my wedding dress?

When setting your dress budget, remember to factor in potential alterations, a veil, and accessories. Knowing your ideal spend beforehand helps your stylist pull options that make you feel amazing both aesthetically and financially.
